Jun Nagao:  The Legend of

A Brussels Requiem* — Bert Appertmont

正如海報上引用的《法句經》所言:*“For never is hatred settled by hate, it’s only settled by love.”* 音樂最終在澎湃的光輝中結尾,迎來全新的一天。

A Brussels Requiem* — Bert Appertmont (18’)

The centerpiece of our second half is Belgian composer Bert Appertmont’s monumental masterwork, written in the wake of the 2016 Brussels terror attacks. Rather than focusing on the horrific events themselves, Appertmont centers the piece on the collective healing of the human spirit.Performed continuously over eighteen minutes, the work unfolds in four seamless movements:

It does not depict the violence itself, but rather the emotional journey: innocence lost, shock and anger, mourning, and ultimately hope and healing — perfectly matching the program note you shared earlier.

1. **Innocence**: The glockenspiel introduces a fragile French nursery rhyme, *Au Clair de la Lune*, symbolizing a pure, peaceful world before tragedy strikes.

2. **In Cold Blood**: Aggressive, complex polyrhythms and violent percussion impacts simulate the sudden shock, collective terror, and anger of a society under attack.

3. **In Memoriam**: The emotive central heart of remembrance. The orchestra weaves a deeply moving, elegiac lament to honor the innocent lives lost, transforming personal grief into a communal embrace.

4. **A New Day**: The nursery rhyme returns, fully integrated and reborn within a glorious, triumphant chorale. Echoing the words of the Dhammapada on our poster—*"For never is hatred settled by hate, it’s only settled by love"*—the music concludes in a radiant burst of light, welcoming a new dawn.In the resonant, sacred acoustics of St. John's Cathedral, this requiem creates a profound space for collective reflection and communal healing.

Danzón No. 2 — Arturo Márquez
danzon.jpeg

danzon 2.jpeg
  • As the closing piece following the profound spiritual journey of the Requiem, the concert concludes with Márquez’s world-famous Mexican masterpiece, bringing irresistible, driving rhythms.

  • The Danzón is an elegant and sultry partner dance originating from Cuba and deeply rooted in Veracruz, Mexico.

  • The piece begins with an intimate dialogue between the clarinet and piano, gradually incorporating rich Latin percussion as the rhythms become fiercely ecstatic.

  • This work stands as the ultimate celebration of life and human connection.

  • Having traversed through trauma and tears, we use dance, music, and joyful rhythm to declare: we are still here, we are still together, and life remains profoundly beautiful.

Danzón No. 2 — Arturo Márquez

Following the profound spiritual journey of the Requiem, the concert concludes with the irresistible, driving rhythms of Márquez’s world-famous Mexican masterpiece. The *Danzón* is a elegant, sultry partner dance originating in Cuba and deeply rooted in Veracruz, Mexico. Beginning with an intimate dialogue between the clarinet and piano, the piece steadily builds, adding rich Latin percussion as the rhythms become fiercely ecstatic. This work stands as the ultimate celebration of life and human connection. Having traversed through trauma and tears, we use dance, music, and joyful rhythm to declare: we are still here, we are still together, and life remains profoundly beautiful.
